U Turn Round  is a third generation self powered (wind up) external audio interpretation product produced by blackbox-av. Its been carefully designed to ensure that its robust to withstand harsh weather conditions and also provides resistance to vandal attacks.

How does it work?

Select, Turn, Listen…

Visitors choose a message using the selector dial (up to eight message slots are available) and simply turn the handle to hear the message. Usually, just a few turns are required to play the whole message; and once the message starts to play the visitor can just relax, listen and enjoy.

Where would you use a UTR?

It’s suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and requires no mains power! It’s ideal for providing audio interpretation in remote locations with no electricity such as forestry trails, canal towpaths, wildlife sites, zoological gardens, nature trails, SSSI’s, municipal parks, gardens and children’s play areas.

What is it?

A field hockey goalkeeper (or field player) training deflective mat.

What does the product do?

Balls will be hit at the D’FLECTA mat which alter ball directions in both height and width. This simulates match shot deflections and helps train reaction times and hand eye coordination of goalkeepers.

What is it?

An egg shaped ball for training field hockey goalkeepers or outfield players.

What does the product do?

The ball is designed to be hit or rolled along the floor at the goalkeeper. The egg shape makes the ball bounce and bobble randomly making routine saves much more complex. It encourages the fundamental of getting your body behind the ball. Also a useful tool for reaction training and outfield warm up and dribbling drills.

What is it?

A stick to help coaches train field hockey goalkeepers.

What does the product do?

This stick allows a coach, player or parent to flick the ball easily at the goalkeeper. The speed is controlled by the user and can be used softly for beginners using their hands and more power for advanced keepers simulating top level drag flicks. Its also heaps of fun for outfielders to play with!

OBO Helmet Paint Job Design Competition

Competition Brief:

“Not only do you need to be making the saves but you need to be looking cool while you do it. So here’s a competition to get your creative minds in action. We want you to design a paint job for a helmet.

Let your imagination run wild create a design where if you saw it in a shop you would just have to buy it…a design that makes you feel like a champion when you use it…something you can be proud to wear around on your head, because when you are feeling confident you become an even more amazing goal keeper!!!”

No Blood from this stone…

About the concept:

The name ”No Blood from this stone” implies that the helmet is so strong that it cannot break or injure the goalkeeper; instilling confidence and belief with the wearer.

Eurobot is an amateur robotics competition. Within the second year of my degree at Middlesex University I was required to build and compete with the competition.

The game objective changes every year with the 2006 topic being “Funny Golf”. I was elected as the leader of a team which we named The Etalian Job team.

The Rules:

“Two robots on a golf course…
The team which inserts the most white balls in his holes at the end of the match will be the winner.
But be careful, it is also possible to insert black balls in the opponent’s holes to prevent him from scoring!”

The Team:

The team made up of Mubarack Kaduji and myself formed “The Etalian Job Team”. The pun behind the team name was our aim; to go to Italy and steal the gold…we didn’t quite live up to our name, but won the UK heats and went on to represent the UK in the World finals earning a respectable 42nd place.

TheRobot:

Cooper (Mini Cooper…get it!)) was powered by two 6v batteries and controlled by a PICAXE-18X microcontroller. A high power 12v rotating fan controlled by a relay switch provided the teams biggest asset. The microcontroller gave the team a basic 5 input and 8 output channel which allowed execution of a cunning team tactic…

The Tactics:

The main tactic of the team was to blow the balls to a location to collect the balls using a high power fan positioned at the front of the robot. Once balls had been collected the robot would follow a pre determined route to deposit any balls collected within its hopper.
