turn 'n' learn

This project was carried out for my A-Level in Design and Technology. The interactive learning aid incorporated "U-Turn" technology to educate children at key stage 3 level (Ages 9-12) of basic energy conversions. The final concept received rigorous user testing from Oldcastle Junior school and evaluation from Techniquest's Research and Development head Rob White. The project was selected to attend the Welsh A-Level Design Awards in 2004.

The focus of this project was educate children about energy transfers. The Turn 'N' Learn concept uses "U-Turn" technology provided by Blackbox Av to generate power and provides an interactive element of the kiosk.

The user experience:

u-turn

Power up the "U-Turn" by turning the handle in a circular motion until the LED flash red.

Using the kinetic energy provided by the user, the pre-recorded audio track will begin to play through the built in "U-Turn" speaker.

The information given within the audio demonstrates different energy transfers. An example is how the sun has provided energy through photosynthesis for plants grow - humans have eaten the food which - converted this food into energy to turn the handle and power up the U-Turn.

thermo paper Another example is the thermo paper placed on the top surface of the product. This demonstrated how energy can also be wasted during conversions, and also ads an interactive playful element for the children.

The project was selected to attend the Welsh A-Level Innovation Awards in my year of completion; 2004.
